Chelsea, Avram Grant and the number 50

By Doctor Gonzo on 27-Nov-2009 at 11:15:53

When considering the history of Chelsea Football Club, it is difficult to be certain what year, if any, could be called the most important.

Any association with Avram Grant might seem tenuous at best, but the fact is, the man is woven deeply into the fabric of our past achievements.

Some people point to the FA Cup win of 1970 as their greatest memory, whilst others suggest the one in 1997.

Many more would say Mourinho's first season, with its scintillating football and our first championship for 50 years.

However, it is in this last factoid that the truth can be grasped. Precisely 50 years before, in 1955, a Chelsea team in their 50th year of existence claimed the first major honour in the club's history. They went into the match against Sheffield Wednesday on 50 points, and secured a win which put them clear of second place Wolves.

Also, this man was born.

In fact, he was born within a fortnight of Chelsea's title win, approximately 2250 miles away in Israel. Strangely, 2250 divided 45, which is the exact number of competitive matches Chelsea played in that season, gives... 50.

His destiny was clear.

(I did put destiny, didn't I, not density? Yes, seems OK.)

So, Avi got about his business, and in 1970, on his 16th birthday, he might have read of Chelsea's FA Cup victory in last week's copy of Football World (it was reported on page 50. Possibly.)

Some time passed, during which I can't find any statistics to manipulate. During this time, Avram had a short spell in charge of his national team - surely the greatest honour for any manager? Perhaps. Anyway, we all know what happened once Grant joined Chelsea.

Now think, if you can bring yourself, of that night in Moscow. Surely, given Avram's destiny, it must be his night. Things must go his way!

Well, his destiny was indeed fulfilled. As John Terry rattled the frame of the goal, and Chelsea hearts sank, the world knew Grant had managed his last game for Chelsea. Leaving the combined total number of matches Avram won for Chelsea and for Israel at a nice round number: can you guess what it is?

Yep. 50.

So don't feel bad JT, it could have been no other way.
